What I Will and Will Not Miss About Argentina

Jul 20, 2008 by Melanie Van Orden

Melanie Eating SteakJason and I have been in NYC for four days, and I’ve been reviewing our stay in Buenos Aires. Pictures and videos of our trip are coming soon! In the meantime, I thought I’d share a little list of my favorite and not so favorite things about Bs.As.

Things I Will Miss About Buenos Aires

  • Taking taxis everywhere (They’re so cheap!)
  • The Argentine version of Spanish (Castillian)
  • The food! You can tell how excited I am to eat the Argentine steak in the picture above.
  • The low prices
  • The friendly people
  • Cab drivers that blast opera music
  • The European architecture
  • The awesome metal flower sculpture that opens and closes with the sunlight (see pic above)
  • Kisses on the cheek when you say hello and goodbye
  • Our awesome friend, Fernando Maclen

Things I Will Not Miss About Buenos Aires

  • Getting counterfeit money when taxi drivers give you change for 100 pesos
  • Sub-par toilet paper/napkins in restaurants/sheets
  • Moldy smell in many public buildings (Due to poor ventilation?)
  • Dog poop everywhere on the sidewalks
  • Sidewalks that are often wobbly or are just piles of rubble
  • Bidets (I still have never used one.)
  • Gaining weight because I couldn’t resist overeating the amazing, cheap food!
  • Crazy drivers (The lanes in the road seem to be only suggestions in Argentina!)
  • No seat belts

If you ever move to Argentina, I recommend bringing your own sheets, never giving a taxi driver a 100 peso bill and doing some kind of hypnosis to be able to resist overeating the food.

What are you most curious about living in Argentina? I’d love to answer your questions in the comments below.

You know, there are only two kinds of people in this world:

    1. People who have never used bidets, and
    2. People who love them

You just have to give em a shot and you’re sold. We all remember our first time!

As I read this post it reminded me of many of the things about Spain.

I would love to move somewhere like this…. there is a small possibility that I may be moving to Cairo next year :) I’m sure I will have a similar love / hate list at the end.

Well, I’ve had bidets and I’ve had toilets that are just holes in the ground (Korea/Japan), and I’d definitely choose the bidets. :)

So, how much were houses down there?

I also make a living entirely on the web, and I often fantasize about getting a condo in Costa Rica (or some place warm I can escape to in the winter). I haven’t been to South America yet. I hate long plane rides, heh. ;)

@Dave - Maybe someday I will be brave enough to try a bidet.

@Forest - Good luck on your plans to move to Cairo. I would love to hear about your experiences if you end up there.

@Lindsay - I’m not sure how much the houses costs are in Buenos Aires, but renting a nice apartment can be very cheap. If you get the lease in your name, you can get a nice place for $300 to $400 dollars a month.
