Escape from Buenos Aires
Apr 28, 2008 by Melanie Van Orden
Last week, we returned “home” to Buenos Aires from a three week trip to LA and Hawaii. We noticed a slight twinge of smoke in the air, but proceeded to think nothing of it. A few days later, we awoke to find the city full of smoke. Apparently, protesting farmers flouted the law here in Argentina and set almost 300 fields north of the city ablaze.
We shut up our entire apartment in an attempt to keep some of the air in our home breathable. I was recovering from a cough that was now aggravated by the smoky air. Jason was experiencing headaches from the smoke and smell. We were miserable. We decided we had to get out of the city until this whole thing blew over.
After some problems with shut down roads and overbooked hotels, we escaped to the beach town of Pinamar. We are currently relaxing in a condo just off the beach and enjoying the clean sea air perfect temperatures.
The happenings of this week got us thinking about how lucky we are that we had the option to just pick up and leave the city when living conditions there became temporarily unbearable. It really sucked that a lot of people were trapped there by nine to five jobs or insufficient means to pay for a hotel or airfare. They don’t have the option to escape to cleaner air. This used to be us! It made me extremely grateful that we have made the decision to create our mobile lifestyle through our internet businesses.
That really is what Jet Set Now is all about. Creating the means and opportunity to live wherever and however you choose. It really can happen! We used to be stuck in the rat race with mind-numbing jobs in a city that we didn’t like all that much. We have escaped to a travel lifestyle of our dreams. And now we want to help you create your own lifestyle of travel.
We will be bringing you the best resources for achieving a “mobile-friendly” income, the best travel destination, tips, and advice, as well as special information for those of you traveling with kids and/or pets.
In the coming weeks, I will be writing here about our #1 most effective tool for growing and fueling our businesses, as well the only thing we would ever need in order to come back stronger than ever financially if we were to lose everything. (Which is something you think about while you’re on the road!)
I’ll also be posting some practical resources to the blog that should make your road to a jet set lifestyle a lot easier. But before I do, I’m going to ask, “What do you want to know from me about long term travel? What are your biggest questions or concerns about a jet set lifestyle?” Let me know in the comments below.

Obviously, how you designed your income source to be sufficiently portable and reliable to permit this.
Hey Melanie;
So, what the plan for the JSN podcast? I can recommend at least one great resource (no not Colligan). LOL There is this great site called The Podcasting Underblanket (I think it used to be the Podcasting Underground).
OK - enough shtick.
Site looks great — Brian did a nice job with the theme. Welcome to the blogosphere.
Regards,
Mark
Congratulations Jay and Melanie on several levels, but especially on the Launch…
I can tell you I have been listening to the IBM podcast for about six months, and really envy the lifestyle! I find myself in the “RUT” and constantly trying to figure out how to achieve what you have accomplished.
If I didn’t have two kids, I think this would be “more doable” - not saying it can’t be achieved, but it is more challenging.
Some questions I have: 1)How do you handle the tax issues? what are the tax implications living in a different country, but being based in US?
2) What are some of the “Practical” problems that you have to overcome to succeed at this?
Cheers, look forward to hearing more
-Jeff Skipper
@Mark Mason The Jet Set Now podcast is currently in development. Jason is my right-hand man is and has taught me everything I know about podcasting, so it should turn out well! Thanks for visiting the site!
@Jeff Skipper Thanks for your comment! I want you to know that I am currently developing a new section of the site dedicated to helping people live a jet set lifestyle with kids. My blog post introducing the section will be published tomorrow. In response to your other questions:
1) There are some great savings on taxes if you live in one foreign country for a full calendar year. Since we will be hopping from country to country every few months, we will not be able to use that tax break. But we will save on taxes by writing off many of our travel expenses, etc., as a business expense due to our new business run through Jet Set Now. I will be interviewing jet setters about other tax tips and strategies and making that information available on Jet Set Now in the future.
2) I cover solutions to many “practical” problems to achieve a jet set lifestyle in my free e-course. The sign up form is listed in the sidebar above. Also, I will be posting a time line for preparing for a jet set lifestyle based on my “to do” list that I saved from when we moved to Buenos Aires. I will post that on May 5th, in just a few days!
@Melanie — is he making you record under the blanket?
@Mark Mason - Well, it is quite echo-y in our huge apartment in Buenos Aires. Besides, I like being all snuggly.
Hey great blog…. I came here from a plug on MasonsWorld and am very glad I did.
I recently gave up working a 9-5 to concentrate on internet stuff, mostly blogging. I am struggling a little right now but things are shaping nicely and I think I will get it eventually.
It does suck badly that people are tied down.
I am English but moved to Montreal and now that i blog for money, I don’t really have a problem moving around the world or going away for a weekend at short notice…… as long as there is a wireless connection
Hey guys,
Im a new fan, Im excited you guys chose Argentina to get away to. My wife is from Argentina and we visit every year.
I own a small apartment complex or hotel on the beach in Quequen. Its about 2 hours south of Pinamar. Its a tiny little surf village, and yes this past January I took a wireless G router and an outdoor antenna so i could stay plugged in. If you are interested in going there let me know.
Enjoy some Malbec for me,
Sean
@Forest Parks - I’m glad you’re enjoying the site! Congrats on giving up the 9-5 and focusing on your internet business. It’s always nice not to be tied down.
